Definition Preprint, Post-print, Editorial version

The best choice for disseminating scientific publications in compliance with the publisher ’s copyright is to file in Iris UNIVPM preferably the post-print or, if it is not available, the pre-print, choosing as the access policy “Open access”.

In fact, a publication can have different versions with different levels of freedom of diffusion in open access:

Pre-print (submitted Version / Author’s original version)

Is the original draft of the author/author submitted to the magazine. It has not yet gone through the process of peer review, copy-editing, formatting and pagination of the publisher. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors/authors. Typically, pre-print can be loaded into open access Iris.

Post-print (author’s accepted manuscript)
Is the version accepted by the publisher/magazine for publication after peer review. It contains (if any) changes made by the authors based on comments from reviewers and communications with the publisher, but DOES NOT present the final editorial layout (logo, pagination, price…). In most cases, the post-print can be uploaded to open access iris, sometimes with an embargo, the length of time the file will be visible.

The published Version (Version of Record)
Is the final version, which is paginated in the format provided by the publisher. Includes early access or ahead of print items and proofs. It should always be uploaded to closed-access iris, unless it has been published in an open -access magazine or the fee for publishing in open-access has been paid.

CAUTION: Before filing in Iris UNIVPM a version of the open access publication, check whether you have signed a contract for the exclusive transfer of rights to the publisher (Copyright Transfer Agreement) it also controls the policy of the contract or on its website or in the Sherpa-Romeo database which lists the open access policies of major international publishers.
